Former Starehe parliamentary aspirant and activist Boniface Mwangi landed in Kisumu on Wednesday with a special message that residents in the lakeside county should be treated differently.
Mwangi, who is among the Jubilee administration's principal critics says Kisumu in multiparty Kenya has paid the heaviest brunt in the country's quest for democracy, especially during elections times.
The Nyanza region county is among electoral zones in Kenya which witnessed violent protests related to elections since 1992 when Kenya re-introduced multiparty politics.
Mwangi says President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga should capitalize on their new found-union to compensate all Kisumu residents who were directly or indirectly affected by election-related violence.
"The handshake between Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta must involve compensation of life and property for the victims of 2007, 2013, 2017 Post Election Violence. Kisumu has paid a heavy price for our democracy," he said during his tour when he addressed residents of Kondele along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.
Kisumu made headlines during the August 8th, 2017 general polls following the death of baby Pendo after she was allegedly clobbered by a police officer deployed there to maintain calm. Baby Pendo died. Tens of other people perished during the period.
During the 2007/2008 Post Election Violence in which over 1,300 people died, Kisumu was among areas that recorded the highest number of deaths.
