A family in Thika is in dilemma after a Nigerian man, Charles Emedo, who 'married' their daughter, Andear Mwangi, refused to give them her body for burial.
According to the family, their daughter started living with the Nigerian man nine years ago. However, they never got married formally and even the Emedo never paid dowry.
According to Andrear's mother, Lydia Mwathathi, her daughter's body is lying at the Umash Funeral home, as the two sides are embroiled in a conflict over who should burry her, who will take care of her kids and the huge hospital bills.
The family has stated that their attempt to reach an agreement with Emedo has failed since he has distanced himself from them and doesn't want to hear a thing from them.
“This has been the most difficult time of my life because this is a foreigner, we don’t know him but we feared that if we insist anything can happen,” said Mwathathi as quoted by Citizen Digital.
Andrear succumbed to a lung condition last month at Nairobi South Hospital.
Emedo told Citizen Digital that the body of the deceased will be released to him for burial and not her family.
“I don’t want to be on the media or on social media. I have got the court order which will be released to them, the body will be released to me not them…they should stop talking nonsense,” said Emedo as quoted by Citizen Digital.
The family of Andrear now wants the court to intervene into this situation so that their daughter can be accorded a proper send off, and also the custody of her children determined.
