Thika Level 5 Hospital has one of the giant morgues ever built in Kenya.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (KMPDU), rates this ultra-modern funeral home among the top mortuaries in the country.
The state-of-the-art mortuary, which was opened in 2014 was built by Mount Kenya University to replace the old mortuary that had been in existence since 1941.
The facility is estimated to have cost about Sh300 million to construct it.
There was a need for a large mortuary in Thika town which could accommodate a bigger number of bodies. The old mortuary could only accommodate 12 bodies.
The capacity level was improved in this ultra-modern facility; it now holds 112 bodies.
Several features make this mortuary among the few high-class morgues in the country. Some of the features include; modern cold rooms, refrigeration equipment, ample parking lot for cars outside which can accommodate up to 100 cars and a resource centre for Mount Kenya University medical students.
The one storey facility was named after a renowned freedom fighter called Kariuki Kago Mboko, to become General Kago Funeral home.
It is an outstanding building in Thika town that improves the town’s scenic beauty.
