Law enforcement authorities in Mumias cancelled the parallel meeting, citing security fears in a letter.

The strongly worded letter warned that anyone who decides to act in violation of the directive of the meeting not to be held would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

"This is to notify you that this office has cancelled your permit to carry out the exercise purportedly scheduled to take place on 18th due to security reasons," the letter reads. "...and comply accordingly. By this letter, be informed that any person contravening this directive will be held criminally responsible," it continued.

The two leaders had vowed not to attend the Bukhungu meeting, claiming that it was aimed at endorsing a presidential candidate in 2022 general elections.

Preparations for the Bukhungu rally are in top gear with the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) expected to grace the much-hyped meeting that is aimed at building support for the BBI.

The deputy president Dr William Ruto has also expressed his opposition to the meetings saying that they are all about presidential politics.
