Siaya Senator James Orengo has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to gazette the extension of the term for the Building Bridges Initiative.
Speaking on Monday at the Parliamentary Buildings in Nairobi, Orengo said that the President needs to gazette the extension of the term for the Senator Yusuf Haji-led team to give it time to prepare for a referendum.
He also said that the Senate has organised a meeting in which they will discuss different issues about the BBI report and implementation.
Orengo and his Kisii counterpart noted that the meeting will be attended by leaders from different parts of the country.
The two senators said that the county governments will not take care of the bills for the meeting. Ongeri noted that the government already allocated the team a Sh10 billion budget hence no governor will claim he parted with county funds to finance the meeting.
"The BBI team has a Sh10 billion budget. So no county will spend a coin," Ongeri said.
The meeting comes at a time when the debate on whether the report should be implemented through parliament or referendum has stirred political temperatures.
ODM leader Raila Odinga-led camp wants the report to be taken to the people through a referendum. The team believes that the report originates from the people and they should have the final word on the same.
