Police officers have beefed up security in Mombasa few days after the DusitD2 hotel attack at 14 Riverside Drive Complex in Nairobi's Westlands area that left 21 people dead.
The police officers rescued at least 700 people from the hotel before Recce Squad officers managed to neutralise all the attackers.
It has emerged that the attackers had planned parallel attacks in two major cities, Nairobi and Mombasa. Their secrete plan was to have the second attack launched one hour after the Nairobi attack.
However, the attackers were forced to abort their mission after police officers thwarted the plan.
Security in major social places of Mombasa has been beefed up, including at the Likoni ferry which sees thousands of commuters use the services daily. The number of police officers has been increased at the ferry.
Other places with increased security include malls, beaches and places where governmental services are offered, such as Huduma Centre.
The Coast region police commander Marcus Ochola said security has been beefed up in all of Coast region with both uninformed police officers and undercover officers being deployed.
“We have an ongoing operation in parts of Bondeni and Majengo where our officers are still on the ground. However, l would not wish to divulge more on the operation,” Ochola said.
