The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has opposed the directive of the government to close down schools that have poor infrastructure.
The union faulted by Education CS George Magoha’s directive, terming it as not only retrogressive but also ill-timed.
Led by Kuppet Secretary-General Akelo Misori, Kuppet said that CS Magoha should have taken his time to consult with the relevant stakeholders in the education sector before pulling such a move.
They lamented that affected schools have been greatly contributing towards the education of the children and a single case should not be used to close them down.
The union said that the ministry should have found ways of helping the schools and not shutting them down as it did.
“The closures are a mere public relations gimmick that should stop forthwith. Prof Magoha must first clean his office, punish quality assurance officers who allowed the unsafe schools to operate and publish the existing quality assurance standards redundant,” said Misori, as quoted by Daily Nation.
Kuppet also pointed an accusing finger at the government for failing to allocate enough funds and other resources for the construction of public schools.
It said it is unfortunate that the ministry is now closing schools that parents and other stakeholders struggled to start for the sake of educating their kids.
Following the Precious Talent Academy tragedy, the ministry has ordered the closure of several schools across the country over poor infrastructure.
