Kirinyaga County was a political theatre on Sunday when over 15 Jubilee rebel MPs allied to DP William Ruto's Team Tangatanga publicly denounced ODM leader Raila Odinga and the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) which he is steering jointly with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The highly charged MPs drawn widely from Mt Kenya voting block told Raila to forget the region's vote while pouring cold water to the anticipated BBI referendum saying it was just a vehicle to create positions for 'old political rejects'.
While the utterances made during the event may have captured the eyes of many than anything else, something else that was conspicuous about the whole event was the thundering absence of area governor, Ann Waiguru, something that continues to elicit varied reactions among many social media users on various platforms.
But whatever their views, the bottom-line question is, was Waiguru justified to give Ruto's event in her county such a wide berth bearing in mind the other day she was captured on camera having some really 'good' times with her Mombasa counterpart Hassan Joho, a sworn political foe of Ruto?
Well, methinks in the affirmative because of the following reasons;
1. Ruto too skipped her wedding
And what a good way to pay back the favour than skipping an equally big event organized at her doorstep courtesy of Ruto? Tit for tat, they say, is a fair game. Isn't it?
2. Waiguru has since disassociated herself with Team Tangatanga
Waiguru is no longer the active Team Tangatanga member that she once was. She has since shifted her allegiance to Embrace Movement which is associated with Tangatanga's rival camp, Kieleweke.
As such, you don't expect Waiguru to follow Ruto wherever he goes including her county if the main agenda is to popularize his 2022 presidential bid.
3. She would have been uncomfortable
This would have been as a result of Kirinyaga Woman Rep Purity Ngirici's presence. Ngirici, a close ally of Ruto, is a fierce critic of the governor and is even said to be eyeing her seat come 2022.
Therefore, Waiguru would have been at odds sharing the same platform with her sworn political nemesis. After all in politics, they say, "my enemy's friend becomes my enemy too."
