22 drug users who were arrested by the police have asked a Mombasa Court to compel the police to supply them with methadone while they are being detained.
The accused who were arraigned in court over drug charges asked to be supplied with methadone, a substitute that reduces withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to drugs.
The accused who are between 18-29 years old claimed that they are on rehabilitation and need methadone which is used in the treatment of morphine and heroin addiction.
Mbarak Said Mbarak, one of the accused who was arrested while in possession of one roll of bhang worth Sh50 told the court that he has been experiencing a severe headache after his arrest on August 12.
“Sir I pray you come to my aid, if I don’t get the methadone drug then I might not last to see the end of this case, I feel like I’m going crazy,” said Mbarak as quoted by Daily Nation.
The addicts were arrested by the police during an operation conducted in Magodoroni in Kisauni, Bamburi and Bombolulu targeting those who engage in the sale and use of illegal drugs.
Mohammed Omar who was arrested while in possession of 50 grams of bhang said he is unable to sleep due to nightmares while in police custody.
Mombasa Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo will give directions on whether the suspects will be supplied with methadone in the next case hearing on August 15.
