The MP on Monday said that most of those opposed to the proposed referendum are allies of Deputy President William Ruto, who think it will affect his 2022 presidential ambitions.

However, he pointed out the country cannot make a U-turn on the campaign because of an individual's stand, adding that national decisions cannot be made based on one person.

“We cannot avoid a referendum because Ruto’s political supporters are afraid it will affect their candidate’s 2022 chances. We cannot make national decisions based on how they affect an individual’s political ambitions; whoever he is," he stated.

He also proposed that the changes be made before the 2022 general elections so that the next regime can start its operations using the new laws when it takes over.

He added that Kenyans should be allowed to make their decision on whether they want the changes or not, early enough.

“We need to make the decision before the elections; in good enough time, to enable preparation and transition if any is required, for the subsequent government structure."

Siaya Senator James Orengo on Monday proposed that the country goes for the referendum by mid this year.

However, the suggestion was dismissed by his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen who doubted if the amendments can be done within the remaining six months.
