Residents of Matungulu in Machakos county have been urged to avoid using unsafe pit latrines in a bid to avoid accidents.
Speaking on Friday Matungulu Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Gerald Omoke said that this rainy season many pit latrines in the villages have become a death trap.
"We have seen cases of latrines caving in and claiming lives in Machakos county. We should be safe than sorry and avoid using pit latrines that look like they can collapse anytime," said Omoke.
He urged residents to ensure that the unsafe pit latrines are brought down and build new ones or should avoid using them this rainy season due to increased chances of contracting water-borne diseases.
"If your pit latrine has collapsed build another one and if possible avoid defecating in forests use your neighbour's latrine instead of causing a breakout of a disease that will affect a whole village," said the ACC.
The administrator warned residents that several rivers in the sub-county had swollen up as well due to heavy rains and they should avoid crossing them until the water levels came down.
"Wait for the water levels to go down before crossing these rivers. Better postpone your journey than suffer the fate of several people who died after being swept by river waters," he added.
