Suspected members of the Al-Shabaab terror group attacked a police post in Mandera county on Saturday morning at around 12.40 am.
Reports by The Star indicate that security forces managed to successfully fight off the terrorists who had launched the attack at a place between Banisa and Rhamu areas.
Mandera County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom confirmed to The Star that no Kenyan security personnel was injured or died during the attack.
Rural Border Patrol Unit, Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit and GSU helped in preventing the terrorists from destroying a communication mast in the county.
“I want to confirm that there was an attempted attack by the militants that flopped. All our officers have been accounted for with casualties coming from them since there were traces of blood going towards their escape route in Somalia,” Kosiom stated.
The police officers from the county are in pursuit of the terrorists.
“We are using the local chief and elders to pursue the militants. We are optimistic of finding them before they cross over to Somalia,” Kosiom noted.
He further advised members of the public to cooperate with security officers to prevent future attacks.
“With the information in our hands, we will be able to prevent would-be attacks. That is why we continue to appeal to locals to be patriotic and work closely with the security apparatus,” he added.
Suspected AL Shabaab terrorists recently attacked an army base in Lamu.
