ODM Nominated Senator Dr Agnes Zani says being in politics is tough since her line of profession was far from politics.
Zani got into the political scene first as a nominated MP on an ODM ticket and later in the same capacity in the Senate.
Although politics take up much of her time, she still lectures at the University of Nairobi where she takes on statistics at the Department of Sociology.
"I do step into my classes when I can and take my students through statistics lessons. I ask if they have questions at the end… I have continued to supervise my students and I also publish," she says.
Through her legislative role, she boasts of a high number of bills - seven - published under her name over the period she has been in politics.
The bills are; the Elections Amendment Bill (2018), Natural Resources Benefit Sharing Bill (2018), Public Finance Management (Amendment) Bill 2019, County Tourism Bill (2019), the Establishment of Children’s Homes Bill (2019), the Community Health Services Bill (2019) and the County Government Amendment Bill (2019).
“It has been a great opportunity changing theory into practice and getting a chance to address societal inequalities through legislation and action,” the senator states.
She says that the work of a legislator is to supervise government institutions, represent the people and make laws. She concedes that drafting a bill is a lot of work which she notes that many legislators keep away from.
“A lot of research needs to go into it and one must ensure that the whole bill flows well and that the nexus of the issue is well-addressed,” she adds.
