Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i's decision to suspend a trip to disaster-hit West Pokot has taken a political angle.
On Monday, Matiang'i in the company of CS Eugene Wamalwa and other state officers suspended the trip, citing poor weather.
The team is currently at Eldoret where they are waiting for an okay from the pilot upon which they will make a decision to travel or not.
"State officers, including CS @EugeneLWamalwa, @IG_NPS, Rift Valley RC and I have been compelled to land at Eldoret Int'l Airport on our way to West Pokot due to inclement weather. We hope to make there soon to appraise recovery & response operations and make possible adjustments," Matiang'i tweeted.
At least 52 people have been confirmed dead following Saturday's landslides West Pokot.
Matiang'i's decision to suspend the trip has irked Pokot South MP David Pkosing, who wondered how other people were able to reach the region despite the weather.
While hailing DP William Ruto for visiting, Pkosing suggested that Matiang'i's excuse was flimsy, arguing that the minister should have used road transport.
"As for CS Matiangi, I think he doesn't care or doesn't like our people despite H.E. the President giving express directions, in fact he called to tell me as such... Amekwama Eldoret, ati bad weather, which bad weather?" he questioned.
"Yeye ako na weather yake. Kwani kuna weather different ya Matiangi na watu wengine. In any event, Kapenguria is just 1 hour 30 minutes drive from Eldoret. Anyway, we are counting our true friends."
President Uhuru Kenyatta had on Saturday ordered the deployment of Kenya Defense Forces team for search and rescue operations in the region.
