Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago now says it’s the public to blame for Precious Talent Academy tragedy where eight lives were lost after a classroom wall collapsed.
At least 64 others were left with serious injuries.
He says it is sad that when a county government wants to destroy illegal structure not fit for human habitation, the public is usually on the forefront condemning the government.
“First of all, I want to send a message of condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. The public is to blame since they are always against County demolishing illegal structures,” said the Uasin Gishu Governor.
He spoke to the press at the County headquarters on Tuesday calling on residents to always ensure that their buildings are always inspected to guarantee safety.
“The public should always support the government while implementing these programmes since under the under the Physical Planning Act, all buildings that come up must be structurally sound, fit for human habitation,” Mandago added.
He also revealed that the weakness of most county governments is the personnel who inspect buildings; they don’t regularly check buildings leading to tragedies.
Governor Mandago, however, said that he has directed a team of public works officials to ensure schools around are inspected for safety purposes.
