Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has explained the reasons behind his recent major reshuffle of senior and junior police officers across the country.
This comes after a number of police officers were spotted raiding and destroying people's property, especially in Nairobi.
Others have also been involved in heists, especially on transit from banks, which is the complete opposite of what is expected of them.
The IG now says that the changes were necessary, in a bid to move a section of officers whose stay in one place for a long time.
Speaking on Sunday, he said that it's such officers who have been working with crooks, ending up in crime, and soiling the reputation of the entire police force.
"A few had turned to crime and worked with criminals. It is these few officers who have given the service a bad name," he said in an exclusive interview.
The IG, who is only six months in the office, said that a majority of those moved had been stationed in the same place for over five years.
However, he indicated that the majority of his officers are disciplined and honest.
In the changes, which have largely affected Nyanza, Western and Nairobi regions, he said that he made the decision after wide consultations.
"All transfers were as a result of a bottom-up approach and wide consultations. I have spent a lot of time listening before making the changes," he added.
