Nakuru County is already laying plans for its elevation into a city.
Already, Governor Lee Kinyanjui is attending meetings with other city counties bosses to plan ahead as it awaits its elevation in April next year.
Kinyanjui made the announcement on Wednesday and splashed photos sitting side-to-side with Nairobi County boss Mike Sonko.
"Joined other governors from City Counties in a meeting in Nairobi with the Commission on Revenue Allocation and the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development on resource allocation,” Kinyanjui said.
The meeting, the county chief said, was to start lobbying for more cash from the national government.
“The five counties; Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Uasin Gishu and Nakuru do not get funds to run functions that were before devolution financed by the national government through the Ministry of Local Governments, leading to strain of County resources. Nakuru County is set to receive the City status charter by April next year and it is incumbent upon us to plan right from the start for our urban development infrastructure,” Kinyanjui said.
He added that his plan is to make Nakuru a centre of economic growth by prudent use of resources.
