Okoth succumbed to colorectal cancer late last month, which thrust ODM party back to the drawing board as it seeks to retain the seat.

As a result, four aspirants have already declared interest in the seat, among them Okoth's brother Imran Okoth, who enjoys the family's backing as he was close to the deceased.

Also in the list is National Youth Coordinator Benson Musungu, who says that as much as he is not expecting a direct ticket, these should be free and fair nominations.

“I have expressed my interest to vie for the seat but I do not wish to be given a direct ticket. We should go for a free, fair and credible nomination process,” he told the Standard on Thursday.

Others are former MCA Pius K'Otieno and Human Rights activist Editah Vitalis, even as the party says that it has not received any formal interest from the named persons.

“ODM has not received any application from any candidate to vie on its ticket. I cannot say whether I will run or not,” said party Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna who is also said to be eyeing the seat, claims he has neither confirmed or denied.

ODM National Chair John Mbadi said that a meeting is set for next week, where they will decide on how to pick a candidate for the race.

Also deemed to be eyeing the seat is ODM leader Raila Odinga's strategist Eliud Owalo who recently resigned from the party, but he is yet to officiate his said ambitions.
