Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o on Thursday met African Union High Representative For infrastructure Development Raila Odinga at his Nairobi office, shortly after the postponement of the official launch of Kisumu Port.
The port was initially scheduled to be launched on Thursday August 15, 2019, before the event was pushed to a later date.
Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta were among the leaders expected at the event.
According to the governor, he met Odinga for a briefing on the setting up of the Special Economic Zone in Kisumu, the revival of KICOMI, and related projects in the region.
“Joined H.E Raila Odinga as he received Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Hon. Peter Munya this morning at his office for a briefing on the setting up of the Special Economic Zone in Kisumu, the revival of KICOMI and related projects in the region,” Nyong'o posted on Facebook.
The first-term governor said Odinga expressed satisfaction with progress towards setting up the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in Kisumu, including the acquisition of more land and efforts to rope in some of the existing industries to be part of the SEZ.
He added that the ODM party leader similarly appreciated work on revival of KICOMI including work undertaken to assess its current state and possible sources for funding for both projects.
During the meeting, Odinga reportedly asked the ministry to fast track both projects in close collaboration with the county government and local institutions of higher learning.
