Kesses Member of Parliament Dr Swarup Mishra has claimed that the medical industry is riddled with crooks.
Speaking to Kenya Television Network (KTN) on Thursday, the legislator claimed that the crooks were in the business of misadvising unsuspecting patients to seek treatment abroad in exchange for kickbacks.
"Medical tourism is in the hands of crooks, brokers, and middlemen so that what is happening, number one, patients that can be treated in Kenya they are going to India, " the legislator who also doubles up as a doctor said.
Dr Mishra also decried the unnecessary procedures that have to be undertaken by patients advised to seek treatment abroad.
The first time legislator called on consultations to be held between stakeholders in the health sector with a view of taming rogue behaviour in the country.
He contended that Kenyans were being taken advantage of because they were ignorant.
The MP has drafted an amendment bill to the Public Health Act that will aim at ensuring that vetting is done before patients are allowed to go abroad to get treatment.
Scores of Kenyans travel overseas for medical reasons including treatment for cancer, and organ transplants.
India is one of the most popular destinations for Kenyans engaging in medical tourism.
