The accident was confirmed by Katangi chief Daniel Matheka who said that the man was crossing the road heading home before the accident.

He said that it happened a few metres from Katangi shopping centre in Yatta.

"The man was heading home from Katangi shopping centre and while he crossed the road, a Nissan Matatu knocked him down," said Matheka.

He said the man died on the spot adding that passengers in the matatu were not injured although the matatu veered off the road.

His body was picked by officers from Masii Police Station and taken to Machakos Level Five Hospital mortuary.

Matheka urged pedestrians to exercise caution when crossing roads to avert accidents.

He also advised motorists to be vigilant and cautious of other road users while on the road.

"At night, drivers should be very careful and pedestrians should ensure they exercise caution when crossing roads," he said.
