The Kamba community respects its cultural values and practices. Marriage is among the pillars of a family. Barren women among the Kamba community are allowed to marry fellow women to be able to give their husbands children. A barren woman will look for a woman she trusts and marries her for the sake of family continuity.

Barren women often find it hard sustaining families because some of the members of the community tend to mock them from time to time over their condition. Through marriage to other women, they can also give birth to children. The children will be considered theirs even when they are not biological mothers.

In a research report conducted by one of the scholars, woman-to-woman marriages have saved families from breakups because of barrenness. The women are often seen as a social disgrace and marrying fellow women is seen as the only way to make them complete family ties.

“A barren wife can resolve her unfortunate social position by engaging in a woman-to-woman marriage. In such cases, the wife bears children for the female husband, which brings honor and glory to the barren woman and subsequently to the husband of the barren woman,” writes the researcher
