Over 600 families in Garissa County have been displaced following heavy rains that pounded the area for the last three days.
Residents were forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere as their homes were rendered uninhabitable after river Tana burst its banks.
Kenya Red Cross North Eastern Region Coordinator Mohamed Abdikadir said 150 affected families are camping at Farmers Training Centre (FTC) camp while the rest are taking refuge at different camps in the county.
Speaking on Monday at the camp, Abdikadir said rescue operations are ongoing as rains continue adding that they are ensuring the hygiene conditions at the camp are favourable for human inhabitation.
“Our priority for now is issues to do with sanitation because without toilets then there is the risk of outbreak of waterborne diseases that could make lives of these families more miserable,” Abdikadir said.
He said that the most affected areas are Bula Kamor, Bula Punda, Bakuyu and Ziwani as the government, Red Cross and donor agencies are moving with speed in providing food and non-food items for the victims.
The region coordinator, however, warned individuals who are taking advantage of the situation to register as victims in order to benefit from the food and non-food items meant for actual victims.
“There are people who always take advantage and register as victims in order to benefit thereby locking out deserving victims. They stretch donations which include food and non-food items,” he added.
