Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka is among the top politicians eyeing to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in the much anticipated 2022 general election.
Kalonzo who unsuccessfully contested for the presidential seat in 2007 says that he is ready to ascend to power in the next polls.
He maintains that his 2022 presidential bid is unstoppable.
The Kamba political kingpin has ruled out agreeing to be someone’s running mate.
Kalonzo says he is tired of being a running mate and that time has come for him to ascend to the top leadership.
As Kalonzo prepares to contest in 2022, he is faced with serious challenges that could deny him votes in 2022.
According to political analyst Peter Ngure, these three things could deny Kalonzo votes and victory in 2022:
1. Ukambani disunity
Kalonzo’s first headache, according to political analyst Ngure is the Ukambani disunity.
Ngure argues that Kalonzo will not go anywhere unless he brings the Kamba community together.
The Kamba community is divided with several politicians not seeing eye to eye.
Kalonzo himself is not in good terms with several Kamba politicians among them Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua.
The Wiper leader and Mutua fell out in 2013 and have been trading ugly barbs in recent years.
Efforts by a section of Kamba politicians to unite the duo have never been successful.
Kalonzo is also not seeing eye to eye with the likes of former Kitui Senator David Musila.
2. ‘Watermelon’ tag
Kalonzo has been branded a "watermelon" by his political rivals and some supporters.
The former Vice President earned himself the watermelon tag for allegedly being indecisive when it comes to making political decisions.
Kalonzo's political opponents have often used the "watermelon tag" to attack and weaken him politically.
The Wiper leader was criticized when he skipped the opposition leader Raila Odinga’s January 30 swearing-in as the People’s President.
The incident lowered Kalonzo’s political popularity with the majority of his supporters calling him a coward.
Kalonzo, however, maintains that he is not a political coward.
3. Governor Alfred Mutua ‘factor’
Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has equally declared an interest in succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
According to political pundits, the fact the Mutua could be on the presidential ballot in 2022 is a blow to Kalonzo.
Political analysts argue that Mutua is likely to deny Kalonzo votes if he contests in the next polls.
Mutua has ruled out stepping down for Kalonzo or any other presidential candidate in the forthcoming general elections.
The Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader maintains that he has what it takes to contest for the presidency.
