Police in Baringo South in Baringo county have intensified patrols in the region following the killing of a man who was headed for a nearby primary school to be enumerated.
Onesmus Maitano (30) was allegedly shot and killed while innthw company of a friend on Sunday night, while on their way to the Noosukro Primary School for the census drive.
Locals believe that it is the working of armed criminals who have been roaming the area at night, and has since doubled the tension and fears among locals.
The incident was confirmed by Baringo South Sub County Police Commandant Benjollife Munuve, who said that that more police officers have been deployed in the region.
“We have deployed more Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) and General Service Unit (GSU) officers and intensified patrols in the area,” he is quoted by the Nation.
Dominic Kateiya, a resident, said that the two were almost reaching the destination when the gun men emerged from the bushes and shot at them, but the other escaped.
The police boss said that a manhunt has been launched for the suspects, adding that security had been heightened for the benefit of locals.
“We want to assure of their security and they should not live in fear. We are pursuing the attackers who we believe come from the neighbouring community," he added.
