Tension has risen in Lamu county following the recent attack at Manda Bay.
The contractor of the Lamu Port Project has opted to suspend the whole process until the security status of the area reverts back to normalcy.
China Communication Construction Company (CCCC) on Tuesday announced that the project has been halted until next week as the firm weighs the security situation in the place.
The workers were living in fear of their lives after the Al Shabaab militia launched an attack leaving scores dead. The attack left two contractors at the project dead.
“At present, the situation in Lamu County is still very serious. To ensure the personal safety of all employees, we have to suspend all the works and close the site until next Monday (January 13),” CCCC said in a staff memo.
The firm also asked the employees to leave the site with immediate effect. The firm’s management said that is will communicate with the workers the day they are expected to resume work.
The firm had embarked on the construction of the first three berths at the port. The Government had allocated Sh71.2 billion to the project in a contract given in May 2015. The first berth at the port was completed last year.
