Speaking when he toured Somalia in a maiden visit on Wednesday, the army boss said that the US is ready to fully subject the terrorists to tougher combat henceforth.

He noted that the US military seeks to suppress the group following its recent deadly attacks, adding that the US will collaborate with all other involved forces to wipe out the terrorists.

“Along with Somalia and other international partners, we will apply continued pressure on violent extremist organisations," Townsend stated.

Townsend added that the move is aimed at ensuring stability in Somalia, in a bid to create an environment that could give rise to political and economic development.

"This pressure creates conditions and opportunity for further political and economic development," he said.

The group has repeatedly hit the nation, the latest major attack being the Dusit D2 complex terror attack in Nairobi late last year, which came a few years after the initial one at Westgate Mall.

Kenya is a contributor to the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops that are fighting Al-Shabaab militants alongside others from across the continent.
