Jeruto was declared the most beautiful inmate during the annual beauty contest event that was held at the correctional facility on Wednesday.

The colourful event provided a rare opportunity for female inmates to showcase their talents and fashion.

"I am very happy to be crowned Miss Eldoret GK Prisons since I did not expect to be the winner. I thank God and I dedicate it to my fellow inmates," she said.

The 21-year-old is in remand over allegations of forgery and fraud.

She was forced to be in remand pending hearing and determination of her case after she failed to raise  Sh400,000 cash bail.

With the new title behind bars, Jeruto says she will use her position to help her fellow women inmates fight the challenge of low-esteem which most of the women are suffering from.

Sharon Jepchirchir was the first runners-up while Eunice Watila was third.

Eunice Odhiambo, the superintendent of prisons and officer in charge of the Eldoret G.K Women's Prisons said the annual event is meant to nurture inmates' talents and increase their self-esteem.

The contest, Odhiambo said, is also used to keep the prisoners busy and also help them identify their talents.

"This programme also helps to create a good relationship between us and the prisoners. We want them to feel like another Kenyan out there," she said.
