An activist now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare publicly the wealth in his hands and that owned by his extended family.
President Kenyatta is the eldest son of Kenya's founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta.
African Council on Human Security Executive Director Ndung'u Wainaina opines that the President needs to come out, and show what his family owned before he was elected in 2013, and what it posses now.
He said wealth declaration would be a great way of Uhuru demonstrating his commitment to the fight against graft, which he has identified as part of his legacy.
Ndung'u said corruption and abuse of office was rampant among senior government officials, and that is why it was important for the Head of State to declare his net worth.
"In Kenya criminality, corruption and abuse of office is official. Unfortunately, it is irrelevant small folks who are 'fall guys'. Uhuru Kenyatta must declare publicly what he and his family owned before he became President and now, after six years in office," he tweeted on Sunday.
A few months ago the President pledged to undergo a lifestyle audit but the results of the exercise, if it was done, are yet to be made public.
His critics led by exiled lawyer Miguna Miguna have been accusing him of theft of public funds such as those meant for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
"Uhuru Kenyatta gave Sh450 billion of our money to his brother Muhoho purportedly to build an SGR from Mombasa to Kisumu. They stole the money and stopped at Naivasha. They want another Sh360 billion. Why should we spend Sh810 billion to create 200 jobs for the Chinese?" Miguna tweeted over the weekend.
