Cracks have emerged in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) over the new notes launched by the Central Bank of Kenya on Saturday.
A section of the party leadership have embraced the new currency, while others are questioning it's legality.
National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed and Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang have come out to support the new notes and criticized their counterparts opposing the move.
“The war on corruption must be fought; we must support the President in this fight. Raising mundane and peripheral issues such as legality of the currency is retrogressive and meant to scuttle the main agenda, as if corruption is in itself legal. The President should ignore such noises that only derail the war,”Junet said on Monday as quoted by the Standard.
Over the weekend, another group of ODM leaders led by Senate and National Assembly Minority leaders; James Orengo and John Mbadi and ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna, opposed the presence of the founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta's image on the notes, terming it unconstitutional.
“We cannot allow the violation of the law, which is very clear that the notes should not bear any human face. Someone cleverly decided to sneak in the face of Kenya’s first President.” Mbadi said as quoted by Nation.
