The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has confirmed that six people are dead after being swept away by flash floods at Hell’s Gate National Park in Naivasha.
The tour group had six local tourists and one tour guide exploring Ol-Jorowa gorge when tragedy struck on Sunday at 4pm.
KWS has closed the gorge until floods subside.
While issuing an update on the search progress, Monday morning, KWS said that six out of seven missing people have been recovered. Unfortunately, the four were killed by the floods and the search for the remaining one continues.
“Six bodies of the flash flood victims have been recovered, leaving one tourist missing. The search and rescue operation continues as we reach out to next of kin to share details of sad incident and plan together next course of action,” said KWS, in an update on the incident on Monday morning.
Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Marcus Ochola had expressed the difficulties the search team was facing on Sunday as the night fell.
However, he promised the affected families that all will be done to trace the victims.
Hell’s Gate National Park in Naivasha is prone to floods as most waters from Nyandarua and Nakuru counties flow in huge volumes into its gullies.
The place was once a tributary of Lake Naivasha.
