The businessman had been charged with 21 counts of tax evasion and having faked excise duty stamps which he denied before being released on cash bail.

During his release, he was ordered to deposit with the court his travel documents.

It is understood that he had jetted into the country on Sunday evening before appearing for his appearing in court on Monday morning.

A warrant of arrest had been issued against him and other 8 two weeks ago by the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Noordin Haji.

He was being sought after in connection with unlawful importation of ethanol at his African Spirits Limited based in Thika.

Rubbishing off claims that he had gone into hiding in a past court hearing, his lawyer Kioko Kilukumi stated that Mr Kariuki is not a flight risk.

“There was no warrant of arrest either local or international issues against him,” Kilikumi said as quoted by Citizen Digital.

“It is his constitutional rights to be granted bail. We ask you to grant our plea on reasonable bail terms.” he added as quoted by Citizen Digital.

Mr Kariuki will again be arraigned in court on Tuesday.
