The death of Dandora-based activist Caroline Mwatha has sparked debate in the recent days after her body was found at City Mortuary.
Police preliminary reports had indicated she died of a botched abortion, a report the family strongly dismissed.
However, police reports from a postmortem conducted on February 14 revealed that the activist died of excessive bleeding from a ruptured uterus after abortion.
A section of human rights groups has expressed satisfaction by the outcome of the postmortem.
“The findings are almost conclusive because we have found that Caroline lost a lot of blood internally and externally. She was about five to six months pregnant with a male foetus, unfortunately, I think someone mutilated the foetus it has no one left upper limb, it has no brain because it has been sucked out and the skull and bones are fractured," Dr Peter Ndegwa, who was representing Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) during the post mortem examination told journalists.
“There’s a lot of blood in the abdominal cavity and the foetus is actually in the abdominal cavity. It has kind of come out of the uterus because the uterus had been perforated at the back and had a very big gaping hole and this led to bleeding. Therefore, what we are saying is that somebody somewhere somehow attempted to either dismember the foetus then remove some parts,” added the doctor.
The results mean that the earlier police reports were accurate and the family stand was wrong.
This will bring the end to a discussion that dominated the social media over the recent days as to whether his death was a case of extrajudicial killings or botched abortion as police reports had earlier indicated.
It should also be noted that abortion is illegal in Kenya unless it's medically viewed necessary by a qualified doctor.
The question that many will be asking themselves is how come an activist, who from his work needs to be aware of the law, could make such a decision especially going to perform the operation at an unregistered clinic.
It is worth noting that his husband Mr Joshua Ochieng, who works in Dubai had earlier claimed as far as he is concerned his wife was not pregnant and he knows his wife cannot cheat on him.
