Known for his loyalty to the president, Matiang'i has risen ranks within government with Uhuru promoting him as Chairman of powerful National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee.

And according to the source, Matiang'i, a staunch Seventh Day Adventist, goes to church on Saturdays and prefers being alone with family and relatives after church.

"Nobody is allowed to engage him on Saturdays. Only the President,” says the official, adding that he listens carefully to all workers without discrimination.

At a church function in Sironga last year, Matiang'i, who took to the podium to sing, admitted that he was a strict choir chorister during his time as a youth.

He said: "I was among top choir leaders and I love singing. I think I should go back again. Songs are gospel, they preach to people. I'll come back and teach this choir."

There were rumours that he'd go for Nyamira gubernatorial seat but the latest elevation could as well be a preparation for broader roles at the national level.

He was born in South Mugirango but brought up in Borabu. At some point, he taught at Menyenye High School, not far from his Borabu home.
