The duo were part of Sonko's legal team when he was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts, Nairobi, on Monday where he denied multiple charges related to corruption.

The Secretary-General and CEO of Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists' Union (KMPDU) Ouma Oluga noted it was a case of conflict of interest in having the Senators acting for Sonko, whom they are supposed to hold accountable in the Senate.

"Senators including my very good friends Senator Mutula and Murkomen who are responsible for holding Governors accountable to citizens and Devolution are today defending the Mike Sonko as private/professional lawyers. How then can Senators/MPs be against dualism especially for doctors?" Oluga tweeted.

Veteran journalist and political scientist David Makali blasted Murkomen and Mutula for representing a Governor facing economic crimes in court.

"Some of the Senators who are supposed to grill Sonko and ultimately, if it comes to that,  impeachment, are representing him in court. PUGA!" Makali posted.

Similar sentiments were echoed by influential blogger Robert Alai who observed there was overriding of roles in having Senators in court defending a county boss suspected of graft.

"How is it that Senators who are supposed to oversight governors through the legislature are also in court defending the same governors? The mafia have a country called Kenya," Alai tweeted.
