“The ongoing rains have destroyed people’s properties and about 2000 families are homeless now,” said Paul Omanga, Kisumu County Community chair.

On Tuesday the group held a meeting at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground in Kisumu to launch the collection drive as the venue made the centre where various aids will be assembled before distributed to flood victims in the region.

Omanga stated that not only Kano people are affected but also Seme, Nyakach, Nyando, Kisumu East and Kisumu Central sub-counties as well, urging residents to come out in large numbers and support the affected families.

“This rain has not affected Kano people only but also Nyakach, Muhoroni, Nyando, Seme, Kisumu East, and Kisumu central constituencies,” he added.

He said that mothers and children are at high risk of getting infections caused by water. Omanga noted that the group needs both food and non-food items including clothes and blankets.

“We want everybody to give us anything including Unga, rice, maize, and drinking water. We also need nonfood items like blankets and clothes to help our people who are homeless,” he noted.

The Director of Special Programmes and Disaster Management Ruth Odinga echoed Omanga's sentiments, calling upon  Kisumu people to join hands in supporting families that have been displaced following floods occasioned by the ongoing heavy downpour in the region.

“We need everybody to offers to support, starting with government, our communities, business people and any other person,” said former Kisumu county deputy governor Ruth Odinga.

The former Kisumu County Deputy Governor reiterated that kids and expectant mothers are not getting enough aid thus asking all to offer the necessary support the just-launched collection drive.
