Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has opposed the proposal by the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report to have male governors deputised by females and vice versa.

Addressing journalists in Eldoret Town on Friday, Chemno noted that he does not support the proposal, terming it ill-intended.

He argued that governors have the democratic rights to choose whoever they want to be their deputies without being coerced or forced by anyone.

“You cannot dictate to a governor who his deputy governor will be. Let them choose on merit without saying that if you are a man you choose a lady and if you are a lady you choose a man as your deputy,” he said.

“The best way to promote the 2/3 gender rule is by educating and empowering women so that they may compete with men and not forcing the governor to nominate them as their deputies,” added Chemno.

The deputy governor further called on Kenyans to carefully read and scrutinize the BBI report before making any decision, adding that they should not allow politicians to read and interpret the document for them as has been the norm.
