Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has issued a ban on school buses plying different roads after 6.59pm in the county.
Addressing the press at his office in Machakos town on Monday, the second-term county boss said drivers of school buses who disobey the directive will be arrested and prosecuted.
Mutua said the buses found plying Machakos routes past this time will be held by the county government until the school pays a fine of not less than Sh50, 000.
He said his county government will work with the police to ensure safety.
“The unit will work in conjunction with the police and other relevant government agencies,” Mutua said.
“For many years, our roads have created orphans and left families suffering. It is the responsibility of all of us, and especially, governments to do something to stop the massacre we face on our roads,” Mutua added.
The ban comes barely a week since nine pupils from St. Gabriel Boarding Primary School in Mwingi died while traveling from Mombasa on Saturday night.
Several leaders have sent their condolences to the families of the deceased and entire school following the children's deaths.
“It is indeed sad and unfortunate that we lost those we look forward to securing the future of our great nation,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta.
