The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has selected Egypt as the hosts of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This is after an executive meeting held in Dakar, Senegal on Tuesday morning.
South Africa and Egypt were the only two nations that had submitted bids to host the tournament after CAF's decision to strip the hosting rights from Cameroon.
The North Africans bid was more coherent and probable since it had government approval while South Africa’s lacked the guarantees. Many football analysts and media outlets had predicted Egypt to carry the day.
Cameroon was denied the rights following delays and slow progress in infrastructural development as well as security concerns that would have necessitated a conducive environment to host the tournament.
This year's tournament will be unique since the competition has been expanded to 24 nations and has moved from the usual January slot to June.
Egypt has hosted the Afcon four times the latest being 2006. South Africa has hosted twice, the most recent being 2013.
The tournament is slated for June this year and will see Kenya soccer team Harambee Stars, take part after missing out for over 13 years.
