On August 7, Hivisasa covered a story regarding uncollected garbage that was posing a health hazard within Nyamataro Junction in Kisii town. The county had failed to collect the garbage for about three weeks.
The story was covered by Geoff Gichana, a writer based in Kisii. Gichana covered the story after interacting with residents who raised concerns about the uncollected garbage. The locals claimed that the county had neglected them.
The writer interviewed the residents who were in the course of planning demonstrations as a way of prompting the county to collect waste in the area. It emerged that the county officials had visited the area several times and promised to collect the garbage but no action had been taken.
After the story was published, it was shared on various platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp group. Just a day after the story was published, the Kisii county collected the waste at the Nyamataro junction.
The writer managed to catch up with the director Kisii Municipal, Mengo Ochwang who thanked the Hivisasa community for highlighting the situation.
The official stated that the county was overwhelmed because the garbage coming out of Kisii town was a lot considering the limited resources in place. Mengo further urged locals to utilize the garbage collection bins to avoid littering the town.
