34-year-old David Ouma got marooned in water hyacinth when he left for a fishing expedition near Obaria Beach, Rachuonyo Sub-County in Homabay County on Monday.

He had set off from Nanga Beach, Seme Sub-County, Kisumu County.

This comes barely three weeks after another group of four fishermen were forced to spend three days in the lake after a similar occurrence.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi on phone, Ouma noted that two other boats which were in a similar mission and packed with fishermen also went out of sight on the same day and are yet to be traced.

He added that all his attempts to free his boat from the sea plants have been futile, a situation worsened by the heavy windstorm.

He urged all relevant bodies, well-wishers and government authorities to come to his aid and salvage him from the same.

In response, Homabay County Beach Management Unit Chairman Edward Oremo has urged the county Disaster Management team to rescue the fisherman the soonest possible.

Water hyacinth has been a major challenge for fishing and travelling operations in the lake, with a permanent solution yet to be arrived at.
