As Kenyans celebrated individual achievement on Mashujaa Day, Thirdway Alliance leader Dr Ekuru Aukot decided to celebrate two counties instead.

In a tweet on Sunday, Dr Aukot hailed the Uasin Gishu and Turkana counties for ratifying his Punguza Mizigo initiative that has been the subject of intense public debate.

He said the two counties had stood with the people of Kenya by supporting the contentious initiative.

"Today on this Happy Mashujaa Day I celebrate the County Assemblies of Uasin Gishu and Turkana for standing with Kenyan people during the Punguza Mizigo Bill 2019 debate. You're true heroes. You put people first. I celebrate you," Dr Aukot wrote.

Majority of counties that have had the opportunity of deliberating on the bill have rejected it outright.

Dr Aukot, who is the Bill's author and chief exponent, claimed the counties that rejected it did so under duress.

The initiative called for a significant reduction in the country's political representation, abolition of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and the targeting of resources at the grass root level.

Opponents say the initiative will sound a death knell for devolution if adopted.

Veteran opposition and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has urged Kenyans to ignore Dr Aukot's Bill and wait for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report that is being finalised.
