The Head of State made the remarks during an International Conference on Population and Development (ICDP) event which he graced with his presence on Tuesday.

"I would like to restate my personal commitment and that of the Government of Kenya to providing the leadership necessary to ensure that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) ends within this generation," he said according to a tweet on the State House Kenya Twitter handle.

The commitment comes hardly days after he urged community elders across the country to do away with what he described as retrogressive cultures.

He said that he had nothing against traditional cultures but there are those that belong to the past and should not be entertained in this age of modernity.

In spite of tremendous progress in ending the vice, FGM still remains to be a challenge as there are communities that still engage in it.

The United Nations Population Fund Executive Director Natalia Kaneem who attended the function said that the time to act had come.

"Today, we stand united to declare: the time to act is now. Sexual and reproductive health and rights matter because women and girls matter!" Dr Natalia Kaneem said.
