National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has urged the Ministry of Education to investigate poor performance in last year’s KCSE exams, especially in Garissa County.
He said a huge percentage of candidates from the region performed dismally in last year's national examinations.
Speaking in Garissa town on Wednesday, Duale said his constituency was among areas that posted poor results, and asked Education CS George Magoha to form a task force to investigate the issue.
“I must admit I'm very disappointed by last year's results. I am urging the CS to immediately form a task force to establish why children in North Eastern are failing in national exams. They were getting Ys and now they are getting Es.”
“I am perplexed. I don’t have an explanation for the poor performance. Somebody should tell us why poor performance persists. Could the problem be with the parents, teachers or the students themselves? Something somewhere is terribly wrong. That is what should be established,” Duale said as quoted by the Star.
The MP met a number of students who performed well in his constituency, and vowed to ensure they get spots in universities across the country.
Only 83 candidates out of over 1,000 students who sat for the national exams in the constituency, attained a mean grade of C+ and above, with 249 getting Es.
