In a tweet, Kibwana said the bill's rejection is a good move, adding that it flouted the fundamental rights of Kenyans.

He said the bill did not take into account devolution of resources, and gender representation, adding that the public was not involved during the formulation process.

“I congratulate @mknassemblyfor shooting down the Punguza Mizigo referendum bill. The Thirdway Alliance sponsored bill flouts fundamental constitutional principles such as; public participation, gender representation and devolution of resources,” he said.

While rejecting the bill, the MCAs said Aukot failed to consult widely.

Thange MCA Nicholas Maitha, who voted to reject the bill, said it will take many years for Kenya embrace some of the ideas proposed in Punguza Mizigo

“What Dr Aukot is dreaming of may not see the light of day soon, but probably many years later, people will come to realize that this very good man had a good dream,” he said.

Nakuru and Nairobi MCAs also voted against the proposals.
