According to a study in Keel University, people who like to make time for more sleep might end up with a sleeping disorder. Such a condition is likely to disrupt their breathing at night which consequently might lead to a high risk of contraction of heart diseases.

As published in the American Heart Association journal, the study focused on the link between "self-reported sleep, cardiovascular disease, and mortality rate of more than three million individuals from 1970 to 2017."

In its findings, sleep duration of ten hours leads to a 30% increased risk of early death compared to sleeping for only seven hours. The study also found a 56% increased risk of stroke mortality for those who slept for more than eight hours.

“If excessive sleep patterns are found, particularly prolonged the duration of eight hours or more, then clinicians should consider screening for adverse cardiovascular risk factors and obstructive sleep apnoea, which is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep,” read the study.

In July, the University of Sydney revealed that oxygen deprivation as a result of sleep apnoea could cause the brain to shrink in the regions which play an important role in memory.
