The picture in which Trudeau is wearing make-up to darken his skin has been roundly condemned by the leader's detractors.

In an interview with members of the press while onboard a plane, the Prime Minister tendered his apology to the people of Canada saying that at the time the photo was taken, he did not understand the implications of wearing the make-up.

"I take responsibility for my decision to do that. I shouldn't have done it."I should have known better. It was something that I didn't think was racist at the time, but now I recognise it was something racist to do and I am deeply sorry, " he said.

The son of the former prime minister Pierre Trudeau also went on to reveal that he had worn the controversial make-up when he was a high-school student during a talent show.

Skin-darkening make-ups have increasingly become controversial especially when worn by white people.

Those against their use contend that they are racially offensive.

Political pundits were Thursday weighing in on the impact that the devastating revelations would have on Trudeau's re-election prospects.
