According to anti-jigger group leader Martha Makori, the epidemic of the rise of jiggers in the country is alarming with Gusii region being the most affected as the jiggers are now affecting people's brains.
Martha said this while addressing journalists in Kisii town on Tuesday where she was requesting well-wishers and the leaders to hold hands in order to fight this epidemic that is affecting many people's lives.
She also said that, as a group, they are not after shaming people but helping them. Children have dropped out of school due to shame and being a laughing stock in their schools.
“When we say we have this problem, we are not after ashaming anybody from the region. Our aim is to say the truth and help our people. Jiggers have destroyed our people's brains to an extent of not doing a thing,” Martha said.
"When we look at the statistics of people invested in jiggers, is approximately 2,000 countrywide, with Gusii region having the highest number of people affected. In the near future, over 10 million people might be affected. That is why we started this fight to salvage those vulnerable," she added.
She now requests the leaders and well-wishers to hold hands together and fight this epidemic.
"When we started the group, we began with a small amount of fee but since the problem is in the whole of Gusii region, we had to go far distances to help the families invested with jiggers. The funds are depleted and we can't now reach other families. We are requesting the women representative, other leaders, and other well-wishers to help in this fight against Jiggers," she added.
