Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich has defended the manner in which the ongoing national examination exercise is being guarded.
This follows concerns from a section of Kenyans that the exams were being 'militarized' bringing fear to candidates.
The CS speaking at Moi Girls High School when he witnessed the start of the exams said the 'high security' in exam centres is aimed at ensuring integrity in the exercise.
“You must do something to ensure that you fix a problem that was there before and I believe as we maintain this integrity going forward things should not be viewed in that particular manner as being viewed now,” said Rotich.
“This is a procedure that ought to be have been done previously so that we don’t have the challenges that arose in the past. People are seeing that it’s a new thing but that ought to be done so that we may achieve integrity in the examination process,” he added.
CS Rotich had earlier witnessed the opening of the exam container at Ainabkoi Sub County offices at Kapsoya on the outskirts of Eldoret town.
On his part, Uasin Gishu County Director of Education Dr Nicodemus Anyang confirmed that the exams started as planned in all the 233 centres, with only one special case reported.
“There is one student from Elgeyo Marakwet county doing exams at MTRH and we are managing it as the exam will be delivered there,” said Anyang.
There are 15,093 candidates sitting for the exams in Uasin Gishu.
