Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has laid bare the reasons why he joined ODM leader Raila Odinga in campaigning for Bernard Okoth in Kibra.
He is among the four governors who drummed up support for Imran before his win on Friday and now says that it was in the spirit of his friendship with former MP the late Ken Okoth.
Mutua says that Ken meant well for Kibra residents, and having been a resident of Kibra at some point, he thinks that Imran, alias Imran, is the best man to take over.
"The late Okoth was my friend and meant well for Kibra. I personally was a resident of Makina ward in Kibra )Marehemu Okoth alikuwa rafiki yangu and he meant well for Kibra. Mimi mwenyewe niliishi Kibra Makina)," he said on Radio Maisha's Bunge La Maisha, Tuesday morning.
He stated that similarly, he was against attempts by some people to impose outsiders on Kibra residents, thinking that they can use money to force Kibra residents into electing people who are not their own.
This was a thinly veiled shot at Deputy President William Ruto, who has been accused of forcing Jubilee candidate McDonald Mariga on Kibra residents, despite Mariga not being from Kibra.
Mutua added that he was also out to ensure that stolen public coffers are not used to buy the backing of Kibra residents, claiming that the same people were using it to buy backing.
"I went there against the use of corrupt funds to bribe our people. Kama hiyo pesa ingetumuwa kuweka taa (if the money was used to light the region), or build toilets it would have gone a long way," he added.
The inclusion of the governors saw Raila mocked by Ruto that he sought the help of outsiders due to weakening influence in a region he has been referring to as his 'bedroom'.
